Options staff has provided consultation and training for nonprofit agencies throughout Oregon in Josephine, Jackson, Klamath, Clackamas, Curry, Polk, Tillamook, Coos and Douglas Counties, and as far as California and New York. Our initial consultation work dealt strictly with other nonprofit mental health agencies, however, over time we have expanded to working with a variety of nonprofit organizations, serving different special-needs populations. These have included the developmentally disabled, homeless youth, victims of domestic violence and individuals who are drug and alcohol affected.
Designing and Funding Affordable Housing
Options for Southern Oregon has been designing, funding and managing affordable housing projects since 1984. In addition to creating six agency projects, we have collaborated with other nonprofits and assisted in the creation of affordable housing for a variety of special-needs populations including adults with mental illness, homeless youth, drug and alcohol affected adults and victims of domestic violence. These projects have been done both locally and around the state. Over the years, we have developed and refined a variety of practical apartment design, amenities and layout strategies that have been incorporated in many of our projects.
Options strives to provide affordable housing that is:

- Cost and Energy Efficient
We have successfully obtained funding from HUD, the Oregon State Housing and Community services Division, the Housing Trust Fund, HOME, Community Development Block Grants and private foundations as well as in-kind donations from several municipalities. Options Individual Placement and Support (IPS) supported employment program is called "Employment Works." Training and consulting for this model may include:
- Identification of barriers/strengths of local community
- Building consensus & momentum for IPS change
- Funding opportunities
- Staff training & supervision
- Data collection Integration of IPS and existing services
- Organizational development
Employment Specialist training can be accomplished through job shadowing and group discussion focusing on the following skills: Engagement, Vocational Assessment, Job Development, Ongoing Support and Benefits Counseling. Training could also include discussion of administrative and supervisory issues with members of the Options Management Team.

Although dozens of well intentioned attempts have been made to improve service delivery in order to offer a model system of care, it takes a coordinated, inclusive, well planned effort to make major change take root and flourish. Successful change could result in better outcomes that lead your consumers toward recovery, employment, making satisfying life choices and being able to imagine a more rewarding life. Training and/or consulting in the implementation of best practices and organizational systems change might include:

- Examining which evidence-based practice to implement
- Bringing stakeholders to consensus to implement change
- Looking at real-world outcomes
- Organization adaptation to support the change
- Developing a new funding plan
- Political considerations of taking such a change to the state level

Since its inception, Options has been supported by funding from federal, state and local government agencies as well as by grants from many foundations.

Over $4.5 million has been raised for Options affordable housing projects. In addition, another $2.1 million has been raised by Options for other nonprofit organizations serving such special needs populations as homeless youth, drug and alcohol affected adults and victims of domestic violence.
To illustrate just one example, Options recently completed a $990,000 renovation of an historic school building that included $600,000 received through a Community Development Block Grant with the remainder from private Oregon foundations. Funders included Meyer Memorial Trust, The Carpenter Foundation, Ben B. Cheney Foundation, Collins Foundation, Ford Family Foundation, Four-Way Community Foundation, the M. J. Murdock Charitable Trust, Rose E. Tucker Charitable Foundation and Regional Investment Funds from Southern Oregon Regional Economic Development, Inc.
Options' successful grant writers are willing to share their expertise with other nonprofit agencies on projects ranging from beginning conceptualization, selecting appropriate funding sources, editing proposal drafts, to responsibility for the complete grant proposal.
